Of course, the other games all have their pros too, and fans are nostalgic for them as well (see this Mortal Kombat 9 fan animation for proof) but for many, Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks was their first introduction to the franchise, and one of the few games that featured an actual adventure mode instead of just 1v1 fights. Also, as an added bonus, Mortal Kombat II is playable in Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks via an in-game unlock. The game's story centered around Kung Lao and Liu Kang, but Scorpion and Sub-Zero are also unlockable for the game's adventure mode.
Whereas all the other games on the list are closer to the typical Mortal Kombat experience, Mortal Kombat : Shaolin Monks' main attraction was its co-op adventure mode, where players could team up with a friend and explore the Mortal Kombat world and bash their way through hordes of minions. This story isn't just told in the mainline Mortal Kombat games, however, and some of the biggest twists can be found in spin-off titles like Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks. From the iconic "Toasty!" easter egg to the intentionally over-the-top violence, and the unexpectedly wholesome Friendship finishing moves, Mortal Kombat provides both humor and viscerally disgusting action while also delivering a lore-filled, complex story. The Mortal Kombat series has a dedicated fanbase, in part due to the different twists and turns the franchise takes.
